Man United’s Grealish interest

One of the most persistent Premier League transfer rumours prior to Covid-19 saw Jack Grealish linked with Manchester United.

The midfielder, who has been by some distance Aston Villa’s standout star this season, was even tipped as a potential target of United during the January window.

However, evidently, Grealish has since remained at Villa Park, and played a key role in keeping his side in the Premier League by scoring at West Ham on Sunday.

As for Grealish’s Old Trafford links, they have largely died down over recent months.

Whether this is down to Covid-19, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, or Manchester United having not been sure that they would secure Champions League football (which of course brings in extra revenue) is hard to say.

In the last 24 hours or so, however, Grealish’s links to Man United have returned in full force.

Grealish’s hefty fee

First, the Independent reported that the Red Devils had reignited their interest in the Villa captain, and were willing to bring him in even if Jadon Sancho also signed.

The same report also cited Champions League qualification as key:

The confirmation of Champions League qualification has freed the Old Trafford club to embark on more ambitious transfer plans.

However, whilst United secured a Champions League spot on the final day of the weekend, Villa, as mentioned above, maintained their Premier League status.

This isn’t the greatest news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co., because, as per the Independent, Aston Villa don’t have the same financial need to sell as they would have had in the case that they had been relegated.

The report doesn’t mention an exact fee for Grealish, but a further story courtesy of the Mirror on Monday evening claimed that:

Aston Villa’s stubborn co-owner Nassef Sawiris is set to insist Manchester United cough up at least £80million for Jack Grealish.

Such a fee was also touted by The Times, who report that Grealish fears that he could be priced out of a move to United.

It is added that Grealish is due to hold talks with Aston Villa with regards to his future this week.
