Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has this evening provided updates on both the managerial and player situations at the club.

Bayern run riot

Spanish giants Barca of course saw their European campaign come to an end this past weekend.

As has proven the case on so many occasions over recent years, with their backs pressed firmly against the wall, rather than step up, the Blaugrana simply crumbled during a Champions League quarter-final meeting with Bayern Munich.

A frankly embarrassing display on the part of the Catalan powerhouse eventually saw them put to the sword by 8 goals to 2.

Thomas Muller (2), Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski were all on target, before a late brace from Barca loanee Philippe Coutinho firmly compounded the misery of the La Liga outfit.

Koeman in/Messi expected to remain

The humiliating nature of Barcelona’s Champions League exit, meanwhile, has since seen speculation rampant regarding the futures of a host of key names at the club.

Quique Setien has already been dismissed, with a number of outlandish reports having also suggested that Blaugrana talisman Lionel Messi could follow suit.

As outlined above, though, Josep Maria Bartomeu, president of the Catalans, has this evening moved to clarify both the manager and squad situations at the Camp Nou, ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

First, Bartomeu confirmed that former Barca defender Ronald Koeman has been chosen as the club’s new boss:

🔊 @jmbartomeu: “If nothing goes wrong, Koeman will be Barça’s head coach next season. We already know how he thinks and his philosophy”

Next, the Blaugrana chief was drawn on the future of captain and star man Lionel Messi, with Bartomeu having been quick to assure that the Argentine has no intention of moving on:

Josep Bartomeu, Barcelona president: “Messi wants to end his career at Barça. I regularly speak to him and his father. He’s part of our project. Koeman will be the new manager and he told me that Messi is a key player for our new project”. 🔵🔴 #FCB #Barcelona

Finally, and perhaps most notably, an update was forthcoming on Barcelona’s playing squad as a whole.

This comes on the back of claims in the Spanish media over the weekend, which suggested that all but 5 of soon-to-be manager Koeman’s squad had been made available for transfer.

Bartomeu, though, named 7 players, including attacking trio Messi, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann, who are absolutely ‘not for sale’:

Barça president ruled out the chance of opening talks with Man United to Ousmane Démbélé: “He’ll stay. Messi, Ter Stegen, Lenglet, Semedo, De Jong, Griezmann and Démbélé are not for sale”.

J. Bartomeu also added that “Coutinho can stay here, if Koeman want him”. 🔵🔴 #transfers
