Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has picked up a fresh injury problem, with subsequent reports having suggested that the 27-year-old is set for a considerable spell out of action.

Reds back at it

Liverpool are of course currently gearing up for the defence of their Premier League title.

A historic 2019/20 campaign, during which Jurgen Klopp’s men racked up a club record 99 points in the English top-flight, eventually culminated in the Merseysiders bringing to an end their 30-year wait for domestic glory.

The extended Covid-19-hit campaign, though, has since seen clubs across Europe handed a reduced break, with many having already returned to pre-season training.

Liverpool are one such outfit, with Klopp’s men having gotten their preparations for 2020/21 underway in Austria last week.

A host of footage of the Reds’ squad in action has since surfaced, with all involved seemingly in good spirits ahead of their Community Shield meeting with Arsenal next weekend:

Ox crocked

As outlined above, however, for one member of Liverpool’s squad, preparations for the year ahead have today come at a cost.

The individual in question? Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Speaking in an interview this afternoon, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that ‘the Ox’ has picked up a knee injury, and will, as a result, be sidelined for an indefinite period:

‘Really unfortunate. An unfortunate situation as well; it was a challenge [in training].’

‘It looks like it is very similar to what Hendo had, which keeps him out for we don’t know for sure exactly how long, but for sure this pre-season he will not make a game, Arsenal for sure not and then we will see. The next game is probably two weeks later, but I don’t know.’

‘We have to wait but it is far away from being perfect, of course. It is really hard for him and hard for us, but it is not to change.’

Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the remainder of our pre-season programme after sustaining a knock to his knee during training.

Whilst Klopp failed to provide an insight into just how long Chamberlain’s latest fitness issue could keep him out of action, subsequent reports have suggested that the versatile midfielder is unlikely to feature for the next 6 to 8 weeks:

Desperate luck for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The injury he’s sustained is similar to the one that Jordan Henderson suffered against Brighton; it’s going to mean a lay-off of 6-8 weeks, possibly longer
