Manchester United have, on Wednesday evening, officially announced the signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
Van de Beek’s Ajax stint
Van de Beek spent just over 12 years on Ajax’s books, joining their youth ranks in 2008.
The midfielder, who typically lines out in the no.10 role, went on to establish himself as just one of countless top-quality talents to emerge from the Dutch capital over the years.
The Dutchman was particularly impressive over the previous two campaigns.
Van de Beek, of course, played a key role in that 2018/19 Ajax side, which won many a heart in the Champions League, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus en route to an eventual semi-final defeat at the hands of Tottenham.
And though some of the star performers from that season, such as Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, have since departed the Johan Cruijff ArenA, van de Beek stayed put – scoring 10 and assisting 11 in 37 outings as Ajax secured a second consecutive league title in 2019/20.

Man United confirm van de Beek signing
Such impressive displays, understandably, looked to have caught the eye of some top sides with both Manchester United and Real Madrid previously linked with the midfielder.
The former’s links to the Dutchman once again began to re-emerge over the weekend, when it was claimed that United had agreed to sign van de Beek for €44m (£39.3).
And United have since wasted no time in completing a deal for the 23-year-old.
In a post across the club’s social media platforms and official website, Man United announced on Wednesday evening that van de Beek had put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option of an extra year:

On signing for the Red Devils, van de Beek had this to say:
“I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.
“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.
“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.
“Everyone has told me how amazing the Old Trafford atmosphere is and I am looking forward to experiencing that, once it is safe for the fans to return.
“This team has some of the best midfielders in the world and I know that I can learn from them and also bring my own strengths to the group.
“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that.”
