Liverpool hammered by Aston Villa

Liverpool are, of course, defending their first-ever Premier League title this season.

The Reds completely dominated the English top-flight last term, notching a staggering 99 points.

And though their form fell off somewhat towards the back end of 2019/20, Liverpool would not lose a league outing until the 29th of February, 2020.

However, this term, the Reds have already been dealt their first loss of what looks set to be a truly entertaining campaign.

Said loss came this past Sunday, as Liverpool somehow managed to concede a staggering seven goals against an Aston Villa side who were fighting off relegation last season.

7 – Liverpool have conceded seven goals in a game for the first time since April 1963, in a 7-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Crushing. #AVLLIV

Van Dijk predicts challenging times ahead

Though conceding seven goals in a single match is no doubt something of a freak result, it does suggest that Liverpool are not the same side that dominated the league last term.

And with Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and even Everton now strengthening a fair bit over the summer, could we be set for one of the closest title races in recent years?

Obviously, it is still only early days, but the Villa loss may hint that Jurgen Klopp and co. will be unable to run away with the league this term.

One man who certainly believes the Merseysiders are in for a tough ride this campaign is Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking in a recent interview, the Dutchman voiced the opinion that staying at the top is the hardest thing to do and also that challenging times are coming up for Liverpool:

“I think trying to stay at the top is the hardest thing to do. Everyone wants to see you fall when you reach the top.

“That is what life is about, especially these days. For me, I want to give everything I have got until I retire and then have no regrets after.

“I don’t want any regrets afterwards, I think that would be the worst feeling you can have. It is going to be challenging times coming up. We are champions – something that took a while.

“We should enjoy the moment and go for it.”
