Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has provided explanations for the absences of three of his side’s stars versus Tottenham earlier today.

Willock cancels out Kane

The Magpies were of course back in action a short time ago.

Bruce and co. welcomed Spurs to St. James’ Park, for their first outing on the back of the international break.

Newcastle headed into proceedings as understandable underdogs, but nevertheless desperate for a positive result, amid the club’s fight against the drop.

And, when all was said and done, whilst the Geordie outfit didn’t manage to completely upset the odds, they did secure a deserved share of the spoils.

Joelinton opened the afternoon’s scoring just shy of the half-hour mark, only for Harry Kane to quickly turn the clash on its head with a quickfire brace before the interval:

Newcastle’s lead didn’t last long! 😳

Fulham’s subsequent defeat at the hands of Aston Villa this evening means that Newcastle now sit 3 points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, whilst, crucially, boasting a game in hand.

Carroll struggling

Speaking on the back of an altogether positive day’s work for his side, meanwhile, Steve Bruce was asked for a fitness update on his squad, during the tactician’s post-match press conference.

The Magpies have of course been forced to deal with a host of issues on the personnel front to this point in the campaign, with the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson and Isaac Hayden having been confined to the sidelines for lengthy stretches.

And, as confirmed by Bruce this evening, such woes have not yet come to an end.

This comes with all of Andy Carroll, Ryan Fraser and Federico Fernandez having missed out versus Spurs due to respective injury concerns:

SB on injuries:

“Andy Carroll picked up a calf injury. Ryan Fraser picked up a groin injury while he was away with Scotland and hasn’t trained for a few days. Fede Fernández felt his calf again too.”
