Timo Werner has taken the plaudits online this evening, after Chelsea got the better of West Ham United.

Werner decides it

Thomas Tuchel’s men were of course back in action a short time ago, in a Premier League meeting with the Hammers at the London Stadium.

The clash marked an absolutely crucial one in the top-4 race, with the two sides, ahead of kick-off, having been locked on 55 points, with six games to play.

It was Chelsea who boasted the advantage, due to a superior goal difference, though.

And, when all was said and done in the capital, the Blues emerged with an absolutely vital victory, to further build their advantage over the Champions League-chasing pack.

The only goal of the evening was forthcoming late in the first-half, when a sweeping move on the part of the visitors eventually resulted in Ben Chilwell squaring for Timo Werner to slot home from close range:

‘Big game player’

In turn, on the back of the action coming to a close at the London Stadium, it came as little surprise to see match-winner Werner singled out for widespread praise.

The German was again guilty of one glaring miss during the 2nd-half this evening, but, all told, enjoyed a fine performance, to hand Chelsea the upper hand in the top-4 race.

Not only that, but Werner even managed to secure himself a new moniker of sorts, after coming up with a telling contribution in his 2nd consecutive start:

VAR controversy

Whilst, in the end, it was Chelsea’s oft-criticised hitman who proved decisive this evening, though, it was in fact not Werner’s latest strike which proved the main talking point post-match.

Instead, this surrounded yet another remarkable VAR call.

With ten minutes remaining at the London Stadium, Fabian Balbuena and Ben Chilwell were involved in a challenge which eventually resulted in the latter being grounded.

Upon replays being broadcast, it became clear that this had come as a result of a follow through on Balbuena’s part, but one which, from all angles, looked completely accidental.

In turn, it came as a widespread shock when, after checking the pitchside monitor, referee Chris Kavanagh opted to produce a red card:

Fabian Balbuena is sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh after he caught Ben Chilwell with his follow through. What do you make of the decision?

The decision was immediately met by widespread condemnation, as fans and pundits alike continue to question whether VAR is in fact doing more harm than good:

Oh FFS, that is not a red card. He’s just clearing the ball. Ridiculous.

VAR just got a player sent off for kicking a football. 👏👏👏👏

— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) April 24, 2021

Lost all interest in the game after the red card. Football may have been saved this week but it’s still a joke of a sport but with refs and VAR

Another VAR farce.

— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) April 24, 2021

More utter nonsense from VAR at West Ham. Ludicrous red card for Balbuena.

— Ian Darke (@IanDarke) April 24, 2021

Balbuena sent off at West Ham after referee consults replays. I don’t get this one. Balbuena clears the ball and his follow through means his foot connects with Chilwell’s calf. Effectively been sent off for kicking the ball. Which is a new one, even this season.
