The Arsenal faithful have flooded to social media this afternoon, to call for youngster Gabriel Martinelli to be handed a 2nd successive start in midweek.

Auba on target

Mikel Arteta’s men were of course back in action a short time ago.

The Gunners made the trip to St. James’ Park, for a Premier League meeting with Newcastle United.

Arsenal headed into proceedings with one eye firmly on their crunch Europa League 2nd-leg meeting with Villarreal on Thursday, with Arteta, in turn, having unsurprisingly opted to shake up his starting XI.

And it was two of those drafted in who, when all was said and done on Tyneside, proved the difference between the sides.

Mohamed Elneny was first on target, lashing home a fine effort from the edge of the area inside five minutes.

Congratulations to Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny on scoring his first Premier League goal for the club against Newcastle this afternoon.

And the afternoon’s scoring was completed twenty five minutes from time, when Gabriel Martinelli’s pinpoint delivery from the left was volleyed home by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal, in turn, have climbed back into the top half of the Premier League table, whilst, crucially, getting back to winning ways ahead of the biggest outing of their campaign to date.

Calls mount for Martinelli

Whilst, in the end, it was of course Elneny and Aubameyang who made the difference when it came to the final scoreline at St. James’, it is in fact another of Arsenal’s stars who has since taken the plaudits.

The player in question? Gabriel Martinelli.

Brazilian attacker Martinelli has majorly struggled for game-time of late, having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta on the back of a long-term injury picked up last year.

This evening, though, the 19-year-old was thrust in from the off, and went on to showcase exactly why, not long ago, he was regarded as one of the finest young talents in English football.

Martinelli surged up and down the visitors’ left with equal guile and vigour throughout the 90 minutes, and even chipped in with a classy assist to kill off any remaining hope of a Newcastle comeback.

In turn, as outlined above, Arsenal’s supporters have since flooded to social media, to call for their gifted young wide-man to be rewarded for his efforts with another start versus Villarreal in midweek:

martinelli HAS to start against villarreal
