An update on the wellbeing of AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez has been forthcoming on Monday evening, with the news far from positive.

Mission improbable

The Giallorossi will of course be back in the spotlight later this week.

This comes with Paulo Fonseca’s men set to play out the 2nd-leg of their Europa League semi-final showdown with Manchester United.

As things stand, the Serie A outfit require a miracle comeback to book their spot in the competition’s showpiece, after falling to a frankly embarrassing 6-2 defeat at Old Trafford.

Despite having carried a 2-1 advantage into the interval, Roma capitulated in the 2nd-half, as all of Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani (2), Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood found the net.

A lovely Manchester United move! 👏

Lopez latest

The collapse on the part of the Giallorossi in Manchester, though, in their defence, only came after a remarkable stretch of bad luck on the personnel front.

Over the course of the opening 45 minutes alone, all of Jordan Veretout, Leonardo Spinazzola and Pau Lopez were forced off, with respective injury problems.

The latter’s exit proved particularly harmful, as backup Antonio Mirante went on to endure a nightmare 2nd-half between the posts.

On Thursday, though, Roma could well be forced to depend on the talents of 37-year-old Mirante once again.

This comes after an update on the wellbeing of no.1 Lopez arrived this evening, with the news, from the perspective of the Italians, far from positive.

As per the highly reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, the Spaniard will require shoulder surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.
