Astori’s doctor found guilty of manslaughter
In 2018, Italy and Fiorentina defender Davide Astori died of a heart attack in his sleep ahead of a match against Udinese.
7 months prior, Giorgio Galanti, then-head of the sports medicine department at Florence’s Careggi Hospital, cleared the Fiorentina man to play throughout the season.
The Italian justice system have found Galanti guilty of manslaughter and given him a 1-year suspended sentence and ordered him to pay a €1 million fine to the family of Astori.
The ruling was given on the grounds that prosecutors said ‘additional examinations’ should have been undertaken to try and detect heart disease.
Euronews reported the story:
Prosecutors have said that the doctor should have carried out additional examinations to try and detect heart disease, in view of the results of Astori’s stress tests, and had called for an 18-month prison sentence.
It was a story which massively affected Italian football with many icons of the sport from the country attending Astori’s funeral to pay their respects.

Galanti is said to be ‘shocked’ by the decision according to his lawyer.
He also confirmed that they would appeal the process.
“The ruling should have been different,” Galanti’s lawyer Sigfrido Fenyes said.

“We are anxious to read the motivations, the Italian justice has three degrees and we’ll lodge an appeal.
“I informed my client about the sentence and he is shocked. This decision leaves a bitter taste in our mouth, now we’ll be working for the appeal.”
No timeline has been given regarding the appeal but this could be set for a long process before a final decision is given.
Astori died aged 31 having made 345 league appearances including 174 for Cagliari and 58 for Fiorentina. He represented the national team on 14 occasions scoring one goal.
